8 DAYS – LEMOSHO ROUTE

Trip Details

The Lemosho Route is widely considered to be the best route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Not too long ago, there were only two main routes used to climb Kilimanjaro – the Marangu (Coca Cola) Route and the Machame (Whiskey) Route. But as Tanzania’s tourism industry flourished, the Kilimanjaro park authority created more trails to African’s highest peak. Lemosho, a relatively new route, is preferred by reputable operators due to its beauty, remoteness and success rate. In short, it maximizes the chances that a climber will reach the summit, and enjoy the experience overall. The Lemosho route can be done in as little as six days (five nights) on the mountain.

Pick up from airport and transfer to accommodation in Arusha for an overnight stay.

Hiking: 3h After breakfast, we will depart from Arusha towards the Londorossi Park Gate where we will register at the park entrance and make our final preparations before commencing our journey. We will be transferred by car across the Lemosho Glades and begin our walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite, stopping to eat a packed lunch along the way.

Hiking: 7h We continue our journey through forest areas where the trail steepens and crosses several streams. We will pass across the Shira Plateau which leads to the Shira Camp, located along moorlands near a stream. Temperatures here are notably colder than the previous night so remember to wrap up warm!

Hiking: 7h We will hike along a rocky path which leads us towards Lava Tower where we will reach an altitude of 4630m and the change in atmosphere is most likely to be felt here. After lunch, we descend back to the Barranco Camp.

Hiking: 7h A highlight for many trekkers, we continue our ascent scrambling up the Great Barranco Wall and then over scree and ridges of the Karanga Valley which lies beneath the icefalls of the Southern Glaciers towards Barafu Camp.

Hiking: 16h We depart for the Summit at around midnight, through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is a 6 hour walk to Stella point and is for many climbers, the most challenging part of the entire journey. From Stella Point, after a short break, we will commence the 40 minute walk towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro before descending back to Barafu camp. After a short break, we will head down to Mweka Hut.

Hiking: 3h On our final day of trekking, we will commence a 3 hour hike to Mweka Park gate and drive back towards Arusha.

Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for departure.
